Reseting Your Sleep Schedule

Sometimes it feels like you’re consistently sleeping like a baby – and other times you might feel like a good night’s sleep eludes you for weeks. In those latter cases, it could be beneficial to have a Sleep Reset.

What is a Sleep Reset?

A Sleep Reset involves implementing a series of actions that can recalibrate your body’s internal clock, known as your circadian rhythm. This clock is easily affected by things like light exposure, diet, even temperature. There are a few tried and tested steps you can take to complete a sleep reset.

1. Be Consistent

Be Consistent with Bedtime: Determine a bedtime and wake-up time that allows for 7-9 hours of sleep per night, and stick to this schedule every day, even on weekends.

2. Create a Routine

Develop a relaxing bedtime routine to signal to your body that it’s time to wind down. This could include activities like reading, taking a warm bath, or practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or meditation

3. Limit Screen Time Before Bed

The blue light emitted by screens can interfere with your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle. Try to avoid using electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and computers at least an hour before bedtime.

4. Micros

Food is a huge factor in how our bodies operate throughout the day and sleep through the night. If you are having a difficult time sleeping, try focusing on key micronutrients that are known to help sleep quality. To learn more about what nutrients help for a good nights sleep visit this blog.

5. Practice Good Sleep Hygiene

Make sure your bedroom is conducive to sleep by keeping it cool, dark, and quiet. Invest in a comfortable mattress and pillows, and consider using white noise machines or earplugs to block out any disruptive noises.

6. Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol

Limit your intake of caffeine and alcohol, especially in the hours leading up to bedtime, as these substances can interfere with your ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. Visit this blog to learn how certain foods affect your sleep.

7. Be Patient

It may take some time for your body to adjust to your new sleep schedule, so be patient and stick with it. Consistency is key when it comes to resetting your sleep patterns.

By implementing these strategies and making sleep a priority, you can successfully reset your sleep patterns and improve the quality of your rest. If you continue to struggle with sleep issues, consider consulting with a healthcare professional for further guidance and support.

Improving Your Heart Health

We’re all about helping our users live a happy and healthy life. Knowing that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death globally, we wanted to come in with some tips & information that might help improve your heart health to give you the best chance at living a long, healthy life.

So, let’s dive in!

Live Healthy

Research suggests that leading a healthy lifestyle including: being smoke-free, staying physically active, eating a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight and limiting alcohol use can reduce your risk. Almost 80% of cases of premature heart disease and stroke are preventable so for tip-top heart performance, make sure your behaviours align with suggestions from the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

Focus On These Nutrients

  • Fiber: Research shows that an adequate fiber intake lowers the risk of developing heart disease.
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: these micronutrients regulate heart rhythm, reduce inflammation, lower triglyceride levels, balance blood pressure and prevent plaque buildup, contributing to a healthier heart and lowering risk of heart disease.

If you’re already logging your meals in Cronometer, it’s easy to keep an eye on your fiber and omega-3 intake – just check your Nutrition Report.

Monitor Your Heart Rate

One of the best metrics for tracking your overall health is monitoring your heart rate. Your heart rate is the number of times your heart beats per minute. On average most adults have a resting heart rate that falls between 60 and 100, but it can be normal to have a lower resting heart rate for those in peak physical condition.

Your resting heart rate is also influenced by different things like exertion from the day prior, illness, injuries etc. This is an important metric to get a baseline on and can be done easily by logging a biometric or syncing a device with your Cronometer account.

You can view trends in your heart rate over time in the Charts section of the app or simply click the heart rate entry in your Diary for a more detailed breakdown.

Gold users can even create Custom Charts to plot their heart rate against any nutrient, sleep, or activity to see how their metrics correlate.

Check Your Heart Rate Variability

Heart Rate (HR) has been a tracked metric for quite some time, but now Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is getting its share of the limelight as a health indicator too.

Heart rate variability is literally the variance in time between the beats of your heart. For example, if your heart beats 60 beats a minute it’s not necessarily 1 beat per second, it could be .9 seconds or 1.1 seconds between heart beats.

HRV is a highly personal number that can fluctuate greatly based on many factors depending on the day. So, it’s more important to track the trends of your HRV to develop your own baseline. HRV can give you great clues to aid your training, as it tends to increase on days where you’re rested versus you might see lower HRV numbers on days you’re more fatigued.

A lot of trackers on the market these days will use HRV in conjunction with your sleep to give you an idea on how rested you are – you might see it termed as “body battery”, “readiness score” or something similar.

Ensure Good Gut Health

In recent years, scientific research has shed light on a fascinating relationship between gut health and cardiovascular well-being. Let’s delve into the emerging research on the gut-heart connection, focusing on the role of probiotics in nurturing a healthier heart.

Gut Microbiota: The gut is home to trillions of microorganisms collectively known as the gut microbiota. These microorganisms play a crucial role in digestion, nutrient absorption, and even immune system regulation. Recent studies suggest that the composition of the gut microbiota may influence cardiovascular health.

Inflammation and Heart Disease: Chronic inflammation is a key factor in the development of heart disease. An imbalanced gut microbiota can contribute to systemic inflammation, which, in turn, may elevate the risk of cardiovascular conditions. Probiotics, the beneficial bacteria that support gut health, have shown promise in reducing inflammation.

Probiotics and Blood Pressure: High blood pressure is a significant risk factor for heart disease. Some studies indicate that certain strains of probiotics may contribute to the regulation of blood pressure by producing bioactive compounds that influence blood vessel function.

Blood Sugar Regulation: Elevated blood sugar levels are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
Probiotics may positively influence glucose metabolism, promoting better blood sugar control and, subsequently, supporting heart health.

Foods that Support Gut Health: Yogurt with Live Cultures, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, probiotic supplements.

As our understanding of the gut-heart connection deepens, it becomes increasingly clear that a flourishing gut microbiota is an ally in the pursuit of heart health. By embracing probiotic-rich foods and supplements, you can nurture your gut and potentially reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Remember, maintaining a balanced and varied diet, coupled with a healthy lifestyle, contributes to overall well-being and sets the stage for a heart-healthy future.

The Truth About Cholesterol

In the past, consuming cholesterol got a bad reputation for also increasing your blood cholesterol levels. Through research we know that high blood cholesterol levels are associated with an increased risk for heart disease, this knowledge spurred many people to cut back on the amount of cholesterol they were eating.

Now studies show there isn’t much correlation between the amount of cholesterol a person consumes and their blood cholesterol levels. We make around 800-1500 mg of cholesterol a day. Dietary intake is typically 100-300 mg/day. So, we aren’t eating much compared to what our bodies are making.

Additionally, if we eat more cholesterol, we reduce the amount our bodies make and increase how much we remove from the body to compensate.

The bottom line is if you’re worried about your cholesterol levels, have a chat with your physician to make sure you’re in the clear, but for the most part the amount you consume likely won’t have a big impact on your blood cholesterol levels.

How Cronometer Can Help

A Cronometer can be an excellent tool to help track and improve your heart health. Here are a few ways you can leverage the app to make sure your heart is in tip-top shape:

  • Log your meals and keep track of your food intake to make sure you’re eating a well-balanced diet. Are you reaching all of the recommended intakes for vitamins and minerals? Keep a close eye on fiber in particular.
  • Log your exercise in Cronometer. This will help keep you accountable and you can keep track of trends and progress in your activity over time.
  • Regularly log your weight in Cronometer to maintain a record and have awareness of the trends in your weight. Fluctuations in weight is normal to a degree, but it’s good to keep track so you’re aware of any unusual changes right away.
  • Log habits like smoking or meditation to gain awareness and insights into your behaviours. If you don’t see your ‘habit’ in the database, Gold subscribers can create Custom Biometrics or Custom Exercises to track anything they’d like!
  • Keep an eye on your heart rate or heart rate variability in Cronometer by syncing a device or logging a biometric. Gold subscribers can create Custom Charts to compare their heart rate or HRV against any nutrient (like caffeine) or any biometric (like sleep) to find correlations between two variables.

In Support Of Heart Month This February

We're Donating 50% Of Canadian Proceeds Sold On Valentine's Day To The Heart & Stroke Foundation Of Canada

Instead of buying up the flower supply and devouring chocolate all day, we wanted to support a cause that is very dear to our hearts. Okay, we’re not going to completely rule out the chocolate… but this Valentine’s Day, we’ve decided to donate 50% of all Canadian proceeds made from Gold subscriptions to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada 🇨🇦.

Why Heart & Stroke?

We love all of our users and love being able to support them in living a happier, healthier life. With cardiovascular disease being the leading cause of death globally, we think that raising awareness and funding research in this area is important. We’re more than happy to support the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada’s efforts behind this and this campaign is only a small step towards how we’d like to continue to support creating healthier communities.

Last year, we ran a similar campaign which we deemed a great success. We rounded up our donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada for a totl of $1,000.

Prevention With Cronometer

Almost 80% of premature  heart disease and stroke can be prevented through healthy behaviours. That means that habits like eating healthy, being active and living smoke free, can have a big impact on your health.

This is where we can help! Not only is using Cronometer a good way to keep track of your habits, it can help to motivate you as well.

  • Log your meals and hit all of your nutrient targets to make sure you’re getting a well-balanced diet.
  • Track your exercise to help you get moving. Syncing a device will do this for you!
  • Track habits like sleep or smoking to monitor them over time.

So, whether you wanted to upgrade your account to Gold on Feb 14 to support the cause, or simply log all of your meals to make sure that you’re eating a well-balanced diet, we’re wishing you a strong, heart-healthy future!

Happy Valentine’s Day! ❤

Taking Advantage Of Your Imported Sleep Stats

NEW: APPLE HEALTH & HEALTH CONNECT NOW IMPORTING SLEEP DATA

On the latest version of Cronometer, users can now import sleep data from Apple Health and Health Connect. Users will have access to a new Sleep Dashboard widget, a new Sleep Chart and will have more options for sleep metrics while creating Custom Charts.

Are you ready to dive into the fascinating world of sleep tracking and nutrition? Understanding your sleep patterns alongside keeping tabs on your diet can be crucial to a healthier you. Sleep and nutrition have a two-way and rather complex relationship, and we want to help simplify it! In this blog, we’ll cover how to import your sleep data into Cronometer and how you can go about leveraging that information.

So, grab a comfy seat (and maybe a cup of herbal tea), and let’s embark on this journey to better health, starting with the power of a good night’s sleep!

How To Import Your Sleep Data

Currently, we support the import of sleep data from Apple Health, Fitbit, Garmin, Oura, WHOOP, Withings and Polar devices. If you haven’t already, sync a device with your Cronometer account.

During the sync process, make sure ‘Import Sleep’ is ticked as one of the metrics to import. Once connected, Cronometer will automatically bring in your sleep data as a biometric in your Diary.

In the next section, we’ll go over where this data will appear and how you can use it to better understand the relationship between nutrition and your sleep.

Understanding Your Sleep Data

On Your Diary

You’ll see your imported sleep data show up as a biometrics in your Diary. Depending on your device, you may see several entries including sleep, sleep score and recovery score.

  • Sleep: this will show your total sleep duration. Click on the arrow on mobile or ‘Show More’ on web to see your Sleep Breakdown, which goes into more detail about your sleep stages.
  • Sleep Score: many devices will give you a score for how well you slept the previous night. If your device offers a ‘sleep score’, it will be imported.
  • Recovery: many devices will give you a score for how recovered and ready to take on the day you are. If your devices offers a ‘recovery score’, ‘body battery score’ or ‘readiness score’ it will be imported as the ‘Recovery’ biometric in Cronometer.

On Your Dashboard

On your Dashboard, you’ll see a Sleep Widget, listing your sleep duration as well as your sleep and recovery scores, if available.

Click into the widget to access your Sleep Breakdown, which goes into more detail about the time you spent in different sleep stages, time in bed, the time you went to bed and the time you woke up.

In Your Charts

In your Charts (Dashboard > Charts) you’ll automatically see a Sleep Stages Chart, which gives you a more visual look at how long you’re spending in each sleep stage over time.

Click into the Chart widget to change the date range or change which days are displayed. You can also overlay fasting periods or your cycle phase (currently available from Oura only) on top of the Chart to see if those may be impacting the quality of your sleep.

Gold users also have the ability to Chart their sleep stage against any nutrient or biometric. If you’re wondering how to apply that ability, keep reading for a couple of ideas!

Leveraging Your Sleep Data

How can I actually use this information, you ask? Here are a few ideas:

  • Chart your alcohol intake against your sleep: drinking alcohol can affect your sleep. Learn how by creating a Custom Chart with your alcohol intake and your sleep. Try looking at your sleep duration, your sleep score and each of the different sleep stages to drill down into what’s being affected the most.
  • Chart your caffeine intake against your sleep: caffeine consumption can impact your sleep. To see if it’s causing any disturbances, create a Custom Chart with your caffeine intake and your sleep. Try looking at your sleep duration, your sleep score and each of the different sleep stages to drill down into what’s being affected the most.
  • Chart magnesium intake against your sleep: magnesium appears to have positive impacts on your sleep duration and sleep quality. To see the evidence with your own personal data, create a Custom Chart with your magnesium intake and your sleep scores and sleep duration.
  • Chart sleep against your overall caloric intake: sleep has been reported to have an impact on your appetite. To see if you’re eating more (or less) when you’re tired, create a Custom Chart with your sleep score and your caloric intake.

The possibilities are endless! Play around with different nutrients, biometrics and even fasting periods to see for yourself how sleep and diet are connected.

For some more information on how to improve your sleep quality, here are the micronutrients to pay attention to and some things to avoid. Or listen to this podcast episode with Dr. Rebecca Robbins for some more handy tips!

How To: Use The Recipe Importer

A CRONOMETER GOLD FEATURE

NEW: IMPROVED ALGORITHM

We’ve retrained the Recipe Importer algorithm. This new and improved version is successfully matching 10% more ingredients, bringing it’s overall success rate to 92%.

Hey there, culinary creators and nutrition trackers!

Get ready to spice up your food tracking with a dash of convenience and a sprinkle of tech-savvy magic! We’re super excited to introduce you to a Gold feature that’s going to revolutionize the way you track your nutrition – our ‘Recipe Importer’.

Imagine transforming any online recipe into a Custom Recipe in your Cronometer app with just a simple copy and paste. Whether you’re browsing a food blog for a vegan lasagna or eyeing a mouth-watering pasta recipe on your favourite cooking site, our Recipe Importer is here to make your life easier and your food tracking a speedy endeavour.

In this blog, we’ll walk you through how this fantastic feature works, step by step. Follow along as we share some tips on how to make the most of it, ensuring your nutrition tracking is as deliciously accurate as the meals you love.

What Is Cronometer's Recipe Importer?

Our Recipe Importer functionality is a giant step towards making nutrition tracking easy breezy!

The Recipe Importer takes any recipe, waves a magic wand and automatically builds it in your Cronometer account as a Custom Recipe, alleviating the manual process of adding each ingredient to your Diary or creating a Recipe yourself.

Simply copy & paste a URL from a website such as All Recipes.com or Skinny Taste.com and it will upload it directly to Cronometer as your own Custom Recipe – all the ingredients, all the measurements.

But, we didn’t stop there – oh yeah, it gets better – we created the Recipe Importer to source the ingredient entries from our most comprehensive and accurate data sources which means your recipes will have full nutrient profiles. What we mean here is that you’ll know exactly which nutrients are in your Custom Recipe; every macronutrient and every micronutrient!

The more you use it, the more it learns. This feature is designed to improve over time so get to importing to make all of our nutrition tracking lives easier!

Prioritizing Accurate Data

Of course, we didn’t stop there. If you know Cronometer, you know that we’re not going to create a feature without accurate data as the centrepiece.

We designed the Recipe Importer to source ingredient entries from our most comprehensive data sources (like the USDA and NCCDB), meaning your Custom Recipes will have the most accurate nutrition data available. Rest assured that you’ll know the full nutrient breakdown your Custom Recipe; every macronutrient and every micronutrient!

The more you use it, the more it learns. This feature is designed to improve over time so import your healthy hearts out and help make all of our nutrition tracking lives easier!

How To Use It

The Recipe Importer is an exclusive feature available to Gold subscribers. If you haven’t upgraded to Gold yet, you can do that here. Need a bit more convincing that it’s worth the investment? Read this.

On mobile, tap Foods > Import Recipe.

On web click Foods > Custom Recipes > Import Recipe.

Paste the recipe’s URL into the field and edit/add ingredients as needed before saving.

If the website isn’t supported or you have digital recipes saved offline that you’d like to import, click on ‘copy and paste the ingredients here’. This will allow you to copy and paste the text from the recipe.

Leveraging The Recipe Importer

The Recipe Importer helps you to create Custom Recipes and log food faster. Aside from the obvious benefits, here are a couple more creative ways to leverage it’s functionality:

  • Restaurant Hack: If the food you’re looking for isn’t available in our database, try searching for a similar recipe online and importing it. For example, if you go to a restaurant and order African peanut stew, punch that into Google, find a recipe that mirrors what’s on the menu and pop the URL into the Recipe Importer!
  • Quickly Import Your Recipe Book: If you have recipes already recorded in a digital format, like a word doc, PDF or excel sheet, use the ‘copy and paste ingredients’ functionality to quickly and easily import all of your offline creations.
  • Eating At A Friends House: Feel weird about asking your friends or family for a recipe but don’t want to miss clocking your nutrients? Try searching Google for a similar meal once you get home and paste the URL into the Recipe Importer. You can make adjustments and add or delete ingredients to better match the meal you ate during the import process.
