Meet Aaron

Aaron is a Cronometer Pro user and nutritional therapist. He helps his clients go low carb to improve their health initially, then helps them bring back the carbs without gaining the weight back.

Tell us about your approach to food.
My diet is what I would call flexible low carb, with an element of sports performance. I use carbohydrates to my advantage, and opt for low carb for recovery.

Protein is a goal, carbs and fats are just energy. Use them in a way that is sustainable to you, and simply make 10% improvements each week where you can.

What is your favourite Cronometer feature?

Honestly, I love the ability to be super precise with macros, targets, micronutrient targets and the reports with biometric data (being able to add X Y Parameters is super helpful).

What do you like most about using Cronometer & Cronometer Pro with your clients?

Cronometer pro has been super helpful for clients, as the app allows for specific customisation with macro targets, and what to show or hide to ensure clients aren’t overwhelmed. The database of foods is growing which is really good, and so much more accurate than MFP.

They love being able to see micronutrient data, which I think keeps their motivation high. The macro bars are also inspiring. I personally use it every single day, and haven’t found an app that works better yet.

We’re on a mission to get more people in tune with their bodies. Why? Because when you know what you need to feel your best, you can make informed decisions that have a lasting positive impact on your personal health.

Our Know Yourself Ambassadors have been sharing why they think it’s so important to know yourself, and here are a few more reasons why we believe it’s the key to living your most joyful life.
Meet Alex Marshall
Alex is a women’s nutrition coach based in Idaho but serves clients all over North America. She has a B.S. in Food & Nutrition with a Psychology minor, and an A.A.S. in Culinary Arts. She also has Precision Nutrition L1 and Health Mindset Coaching certifications.

Alex works with people wanting to improve their relationship with food, are tired of the endless yo-yo cycle, and are ready to eat MORE food so they can get strong and be their healthiest selves! She takes a holistic approach and look at clients’ lifestyle, hormone and gut health, body image, mindset, sleep, etc. Alex uses our Cronometer Pro product and has all of her clients track their nutrition using Cronometer.
Tell us about your approach to food.
My philosophy is more of an “all foods fit” approach, both for my clients and for myself. I try to prioritize whole foods and sustainably raised meats, but I also don’t say no to donuts, cookies, and the occasional margarita.
Know Yourself Nutrition Scores
What is your favourite Cronometer feature?

The feature I use the most is the Nutrition Report. I loooove being able to mark days as complete/incomplete and then either include or exclude those days from running an average. Being able to choose custom date ranges for averages, the top sources showing when hovering over totals, and the ability to include/exclude supplements in the average are all super helpful, as well!

The other feature that I really like is the ability to hide all calorie information. This can be SO beneficial for some clients!

What do you like most about using Cronometer & Cronometer Pro with your clients?
The level of data and awareness that it gives both parties is unmatched, truly. I do a lot of reverse diets, and it really helps us to identify patterns and make sure food quality is on par with food quantity. I love all the different notes and biometrics that they can add in, which really helps them relay messages about their day so I never have to guess what’s going on.

I have had so many clients switch to Cronometer from other popular macro tracking apps, and they never look back! The different charts and graphs are also so helpful to see trends and adherence/consistency.
KY Drink Cup
Any health tips & tricks you'd like to share?
One of the main questions I see is “how do I combat cravings?”. In reality, cravings are messages from our body that it needs something – specific nutrients, or just energy in general. Somewhere along the line we as a society were taught to ignore those messages!

Once you work on fueling yourself and your activity levels appropriately (read: typically over 2,000 calories for most active individuals), most of those cravings tend to disappear.

For menstruating individuals, they often get frustrated (or even mocked) for craving chocolate before their menstrual cycle starts. What’s really going on, is that the uterine lining requires a good amount of calories AND magnesium and zinc to build and shed – and it just so happens that dark chocolate is a great source of all 3! So go ahead and eat the chocolate!

It's Time To Know Yourself

We’re on a mission to get more people in tune with their bodies. Why? Because when you know what you need to feel your best, you can make informed decisions that have a lasting positive impact on your personal health.

Our Know Yourself Ambassadors have been sharing why they think it’s so important to know yourself, and here are a few more reasons why we believe it’s the key to living your most joyful life.

Meet Shirondale
Our latest Know Yourself Ambassador, Shirondale has been using Cronometer for the past year. He loves doing a deep dive on all of the data that his Cronometer account provides and gets a kick out of finding trends in his nutrition habits. Shirondale is father to a beautiful daughter and is stringent about weighing his meals and recipes so that he is getting the most accurate information possible.

How did you learn about Cronometer?

Through a web search, I was looking for alternatives for a food diary. I needed a lot of control and flexibility in what I used. The name and app icon stood out to me along with the quality of reviews from normal individuals. They made it sound more like a tool instead of a fad with their tone and choice of language so I just had to check it out.

Know Yourself Nutrition Scores
What is your favourite feature?

The Exploding Recipes feature! So if I make a variant on a dish, I can have a lot of the work already done. I probably would have given up on logging food if I couldn’t do that.

KY Drink Cup
Tell us about your diet!
My diet isn’t anything too formal like keto or vegan. I just try to use whole foods to meet as many of my rdas and personal goals as possible. I do this while trying to keep the ingredient list as small as possible.

So I end up buying a lot of dried goods like beans, rice and lentils alongside frozen vegetables and anything else that can be shelf stable for a while. That way if I get tired of an ingredient, I can just ignore it for something else without worrying about food waste.

I definitely used to throw away quite a bit of food before using Cronometer. The combo of wasted money, lost nutrition and breaking recipes made me look for another way. The databases in the app let me see that nutrition for certain foods were often comparable or even better in some cases. You definitely end up with a lot less salt by cooking beans from dried yourself.

Before Cronometer I didn’t realize how much water I could potentially get from eating food itself. That makes water goals more attainable. I tend to treat my goal in Cronometer as the minimum goal and the stated straight water goal as the stretch/max goal.
Anything else you want to add?
I know that for the past year that Cronometer has made meal prepping and logging food much easier for myself. If I just weigh and note foods as a recipe that makes it a million times easier to log food when I’m eating later. I don’t know if the feature is new, but being able to log cooked weight directly in the recipes has made me feel a lot better. I used to just determine servings by trying to equally divide food between containers. Now I can just store food quickly by feel, tare out a similar container before eating then accurately log the actual weight by using the saved recipe. This also works great when I’m sharing a meal with my daughter and I decide to portion things off straight from the pot to the plates.

I’m able to correlate some of my eating behaviors and personal feelings with a combination of shared data (steps, blood pressure, glucose, etc) and just going through data over time. I noticed that my blood pressure got higher after eating certain processed foods, and that I started to be likely to eat those foods when my activity level lowered. My activity lowering seems to correlate with how often I cook my meals. I’m still struggling with some things, but slowly I’ve been nickel and diming my health back using Cronometer as one of my key tools.

Just recently I used the app to help plan my grocery shopping. I did this lightly last year, but this month I tried to figure out a nutritionally complete diet that I could afford and stick to while having a decent amount of meal diversity. I took into account the food that I already have and took an honest look at how I work things out day-to-day. Doing this has been the equivalent of a person wearing a uniform that would normally be overwhelmed by choice and peer pressure – it completely lifted a weight. It may look boring, but it gives me one less thing to worry about and it’s a frictionless experience.

My BMR is 2594 and I’m very lightly active at the moment. I’m eating between 1200-2200 calories per day and am feeling great. I don’t always get all green bars on macros, but I do at least get satiated. If my calorie count is low, it’s not me starving myself – I legitimately was not any hungrier. So I get to eat much more freely now. Cronometer helped me to build an environment where I’m confident in what I’m eating.

Meet Gigi
Gigi uses her Cronometer Gold account to track caffeine, added sugars, weight, sleep, temperature (as per her gynecologist for ovulation tracking purposes), and is considering using it to track her moods as well. She has been actively using Cronometer since Nov. 22, 2021 and loves how far Cronometer has come.

“It’s exactly what I need to make my goals happen. To see where I can improve. To see if I’m meeting my targets. To set custom targets. To track my progress.”
How did you learn about Cronometer?

I don’t even remember anymore! I signed up for an account in March 2019, but didn’t start using it until November 21, 2021. I probably heard about it on reddit. I am watching my caffeine and added sugar intake, and when I read someone’s comment saying Cronometer tracks caffeine intake, it was an instant hit for me.

Know Yourself Nutrition Scores
What is your favourite Cronometer feature?

Hmm, there are so many great features. I chose Cronometer in the first place because of the detailed micronutrient tracking. I find the Notes feature EXTREMELY helpful, which I use to snap a photo of my food and keep a visual food journal of sorts. (It’s like What I Ate combined with MyFitnessPal.)

Lately, I’ve been having fun with the custom Charts feature. For example, I measure my caffeine intake vs. sleep (imported from Fitbit), so I can see just how my caffeine intake impacts my sleep. I also have an added sugar vs. weight chart, just in case there’s any correlation there. I rely on the All Targets chart to see how I did for the day and what I need to eat next.

Oh! Don’t forget the Oracle! I love using the Oracle everyday, to give myself ideas for what I should eat next.

(Oh! Oh! Another thing I find SUPER cool about Cronometer is that you can log NEGATIVE values, say, if you have a burger from a fast food restaurant without the bun, and it doesn’t have that as an option, you can just log the burger in full, then log the bun in a -1 serving size value!!!)

KY Drink Cup
Tell us about your diet!

Right now, I try to focus on whole foods first (instead of processed foods). So, a whole apple with skin instead of apple sauce or juice; nuts/almonds/seeds instead of nut or seed butters; kiwi fruit with skin; whole berries (I love berries, fresh or frozen); whole baked potato instead of skinned/store-bought/mashed, etc.

I also prioritize protein first – leucine, especially – since I’m currently playing a long-game of body recomposition, and building muscle over time for that. Not all protein is the same, which is why I rely on Cronometer to tell me the amino acid contents of the protein I eat!

Do you have any health tips or tricks to share that you’ve adopted along the way?

If you’re tracking calories or macros:

  • Plan ahead by logging before you eat, whenever you can (you can always edit the amount and timestamp later)
  • Get a food scale – and use it! 🙂
  • You can use the Notes feature to take progress selfies, too!
  • MAKE USE of the custom Biometrics!! I import my Fitbit data like sleep, heart rate, body fat % and weight, but you can totally do different Biometrics stats like mood (on a scale of 1-10, for example), temperature, waist, neck, hip, reps, etc.
  • Cronometer has taught me to favour non-branded vs. branded items, since brands don’t tend to submit all their nutritional data. For example, I choose “unsalted butter” (generic NCCDB data) instead of “Kerrygold, Pure Irish Butter, Unsalted” since “butter, unsalted” has 78 listed nutrient data points, while Kerrygold only has 14.
Anything else you'd like to share?

I thank Cronometer for my progress. Since I started my weight-loss/body recomposition journey, I have learned to focus primarily on nutrition instead of overall weight or calorie counting. In just a month, Cronometer has shown me what meeting my nutrition needs actually look like in my regular diet.

And this is just the start – I’m still learning, and excited to move forward into my journey with Cronometer! Thank you again!

If you’re not using Cronometer yet, sign up today – it’s free! For access to all of the features Gigi has mentioned above, upgrade to our Gold subscription for just $3.75 USD per month (billed annually).

Meet Gayle

A 62 year old mom of four who never had any weight issues until early menopause hit at the age of 40.

When she had her fourth child, she was living in Hong Kong and tried the Atkins diet. From that point on, the yo-yo weight gain and loss started…for the most part unsuccessfully.

Gayle started using Cronometer in June of this year after developing a high Insulin Resistance (IR) and has seen some immense success by improving her health, keeping track of her nutrition and impressive weight loss of 24 pounds!

How did you learn about Cronometer?

I was introduced by a professional affiliate so they set the targets for me on the app.

Know Yourself Nutrition Scores
What is your favourite Cronometer feature?

What I enjoyed in the early days of using the app was the ability to check the nutrition value in all of my foods. In the supermarkets if I wasn’t sure of the nutrient and calorific value, I would pull out the app. In fact, I still do!

Now, I’m very familiar with values of the foods I eat daily so I can do a calculation in my head. Then I come home and put the foods into Cronometer for reassurance.

I plan to continue to use the app since it creates a daily discipline that I wouldn’t otherwise have. Especially now that I no longer see a dietitian. This is such a great tool to achieve GOOD HEALTH!

KY Drink Cup
Tell us about your diet!

I’ve found the app brilliant for monitoring my nutrition. There have been times where I have been on an exceptionally low calorie eating plan (which is deemed to be the best way to reverse IR) and it was imperative to manage my protein levels and keep them high! I have now lost over 11kgs (24 lbs) with Cronometer, and am currently sitting at 69kgs. I feel that I eat very well and still feel like I can enjoy the occasional treat.

I practice intermittent fasting, so keep in mind, I only eat two main meals a day. I have found this to be a really successful way to lose weight.

Although, I haven’t had my IR levels checked yet and even without reaching my goal weight, I have a much flatter stomach. This is the most important thing for me as stomach fat has been linked to high cholesterol, inflammation, heart disease, stroke and diabetes, all of which are inherited conditions within my close family members.

My diet is about health and making the best choices to maintain my health. The weight loss is an added bonus…mostly for my self-esteem but I have tried not to make that the priority!

KY Clock
1. Give your body what it needs to thrive
When we spoke to Strength and Conditioning Specialist Ilan Cumberbirch about knowing yourself, he made the point that “you don’t put low-octane fuel in a jet engine.” And we totally agree. When it comes to nutrition and personal wellness, you definitely get out what you put in.

All of our bodies are different, so figuring out which specific nutrients your body needs to run most effectively is crucial to feeling fully energized and ready to take on whatever life throws at you.
2. Feel good about your decisions
Our Lead Nutrition Scientist, Karen, likes to say that food doesn’t have morals and that we as a society are the ones labelling food as good or bad. The truth is, all food contains nutrients. Increasing your knowledge about which foods contain which nutrients and having a better understanding of what your body needs at any given time; will empower you to make decisions that align with your goals and your lifestyle. You might even be able to rid yourself of the shame and guilt that comes along with “cheating” your diet.

For intersectional vegans like Know Yourself Ambassador, Cherise Daly, that means using Cronometer’s Nutrition Scores for reassurance that nutrients like B12 and Vitamin D are taken care of. “I have a better idea of what I’m eating and what I can do when I’m lower in certain macros or concerned about my nutrition,” Cherise said about knowing herself. “I’ve gained the knowledge of which foods include which specific nutrients, and as a result I’ve been able to more confidently talk to my doctor and nutritionist about my plans to stay on track.
Know Yourself Nutrition Scores
3. See real-time results with your goals
Setting personal objectives and hitting them is a major part of feeling fulfilled in our daily lives. Whether your own goals are related to health, career or personal relationships, how much you understand yourself directly impacts your ability to knock them out of the park.

“I have more energy and recover much faster with adequate nutrition. I tend to eat way less food than I need if I don’t track my meals. Keeping an eye on my nutrition has allowed me to avoid deficiencies on a vegan diet and get back to optimal shape in six to eight weeks.” — Know Yourself Ambassador, Joëlle Beauchamp

Knowing yourself also gives you the benefit of being able to more easily recognize when you’ve succeeded in your goals, you can actively see and feel the positive results.

It's Time To Know Yourself

We’ve been talking with our Know Yourself Ambassadors about the importance of getting to know what your body needs to thrive. So far, Cherise Daly, Ilan Cumberbirch and Joëlle Beauchamp have all shared why they think knowing yourself is central to living a happy and fulfilling life.

Another individual in the Cronometer community who understands a thing or two about knowing yourself is Dr. Matt Nagra—a naturopathic doctor from Vancouver, BC, who specializes in plant-based care. We asked Dr. Matt for a few pointers on how you can more easily tune into your own body—this is what he said.

KY Clock
What gets you up in the morning?

Several things get me up in the morning, but most important is the fact I feel so fortunate to be able to spend my day doing what I love—helping people improve their health.

What excited you to be a part of Cronometer’s Know Yourself campaign?

When I first became vegan, I used Cronometer to ensure I was hitting my nutrient targets. The app made it apparent that it’s actually far easier than I used to believe. In fact, compared to my omnivorous diet, I was actually consuming a far more nutritionally complete diet as a vegan.

It also helped me ensure I was consuming enough calories to maintain my weight and level of activity, at the same time as checking I wasn’t lacking in any “nutrients of focus,” like calcium. The reason I’m excited to get involved with the Know Yourself campaign is because I want to help inform others of this great resource that can help them the same way it has helped me.

Know Yourself Nutrition Scores
Why is it important for you and your community to track your nutrition? What have you gained as a result?

Tracking nutrition is important, especially when making dietary changes. Oftentimes a deficiency can be very easily avoided by understanding which nutrients you are consistently consuming too little of.

In addition, if you’re concerned about your nutrition, it also provides peace of mind on how nutritionally complete your diet is. For myself, it certainly helped with the latter in the early stages of my transition to veganism.

KY Drink Cup
What do you tell your community is the greatest benefit of knowing yourself and your nutrition?

Knowing yourself helps uncover healthy lifestyle behaviours that you enjoy. It’s much easier to stay active when you’re doing something you love. Not everyone enjoys weightlifting or running, but perhaps you enjoy playing soccer or volleyball, or dancing, or walking your dog—all of these count!

Similarly for nutrition, there are various dietary patterns that fit into the framework of a healthy and complete diet. Understanding the nutritional value, health benefits and risks, and your personal preferences around foods can help you sustain a good diet in the long-term.

Do you have any health tips or tricks to share that you’ve adopted along the way?

Start one meal at a time. You don’t have to revamp your entire diet overnight to experience the benefits. Start with breakfast, try out a few different meal ideas, and create a new habit before moving on to lunch, then eventually on to dinner. It’s all about playing the long game.

Are you ready to Know Yourself like Matt? The first step is to download the Cronometer app. It’s free to all users with an option to upgrade to Cronometer Gold, unlocking 13 personalized features like custom Diary Groups, Nutrition Reports, Nutrition Scores, Fasting Timer and more.

It's Time To Know Yourself

What’s the key to living a happy and healthy life? Getting to know yourself. The more you know about your body, the more joyful you’ll feel. Especially when you know exactly what you need to meet your long-term fitness and nutrition goals.

We caught up with Know Yourself Ambassador Ilan Cumberbirch, Strength and Conditioning Specialist and owner of Yard Athletics in Vancouver, BC, to ask him why he thinks knowing yourself is important when it comes to your health.

KY Clock
What gets you up in the morning?

The excitement, unpredictability and potential each day brings! Building a small business presents a unique array of scenarios on a daily basis. Learning to navigate those situations keeps me on my toes from the moment my alarm goes off, until I go back to bed.

I’m also extremely fortunate to work alongside an eclectic group of individuals and coaches, while simultaneously coaching members of The Yard community. The opportunity to interact with different personalities from various walks of life results in many educational, insightful and thought provoking conversations. No two days are alike!

What excited you to be a part of Cronometer’s Know Yourself campaign?

I love that Cronometer allows for the collection of tangible metrics—the numbers don’t lie. I was excited to align with a brand that makes sense for myself and Yard Athletics. Data collection is extremely useful for coaching and programming.

Know Yourself Nutrition Scores
What would you tell your community is the greatest benefit of knowing yourself and your nutrition?

You will find it extremely challenging, arguably impossible, to outwork a poor diet. Therefore, knowing what you’re putting into your body is imperative to finding success in the weight room, in the arena or out in your respective field.

You don’t put low octane fuel in a jet engine. And knowing when you can use some more fuel, or less fuel, will lead to better energy levels and physical performance. Additionally, knowing what sort of nutrition is required to optimize your physical and mental performance is invaluable.

KY Drink Cup
Do you have any health tips or tricks to share that you’ve adopted along the way?

Play the long game, nothing happens overnight. A consistent routine establishes order and habits, which results in less resistance and simpler compliance. Wake up at the same time every day, eat similar foods, move daily, exercise your mind and get to bed early. It’s a holistic approach.

Commit to one plan, and stick to it wholeheartedly. Less processed foods, more whole foods. Eat to fuel your ambitions. Don’t throw the towel in if you fall off the rails for one meal, or over the course of the weekend. In the grand scheme of things it’s just a blip on the radar.

It's Time To Know Yourself

As part of our mission to get more people in sync with themselves, we’ve been speaking with Know Yourself Ambassadors about why being in tune with your body is essential to reaching your health and fitness goals.

We briefly caught up with photographer, vegan recipe developer and mountain adventurer Joëlle Beauchamp to get their take on what knowing yourself means to them and how they go about it daily.

KY Clock
What gets you up in the morning?

An epic sunrise to photograph… or good coffee. Most likely just being hyperactive, though—ha.

What excited you to be a part of Cronometer’s Know Yourself campaign?

The opportunity to share my day and inspire people to get fit by showing them how easy it is to take care of their health with Cronometer.

Know Yourself Nutrition Scores
Why is it important for you and your community to track your nutrition? What have you gained as a result?

I have more energy and recover much faster with adequate nutrition. I tend to eat way less food than I need if I don’t track my meals. Keeping an eye on my nutrition has allowed me to avoid deficiencies on a vegan diet and get back to optimal shape in six to eight weeks.

KY Drink Cup
What do you tell your community is the greatest benefit of knowing yourself and your nutrition?

Being the best version of yourself so you can do the things you love and live a healthy life.

Do you have any health tips or tricks to share that you’ve adopted along the way?

I started making my own medicine by incorporating the powerful medicinal plants I forage into my diet. Most items are already in your pantry, though, which makes it easy to reduce visits to the doctor with proper planning.

How has Cronometer Gold helped you and your community achieve your health and fitness goals? What features do you love about Cronometer Gold?

I’m a health freak, so I particularly love the Nutrition Scores feature. I also struggle with anxiety from time-to-time, so tracking custom biometrics like sleep gives me a good indicator for when I need to reduce my stress.

What’s the one thing you think people need to know about Cronometer Gold?

Custom Reports & Custom Biometrics.

Is there anything else that you’d like to share?

I love the bar code scanner. It makes it so easy to create recipes, which helps a lot for my meal prep.

It's Time To Know Yourself

When it comes to truly knowing yourself, your fitness and nutrition have to come first. If you know exactly what you’re putting in your body and how it’s impacting your daily performance, you can make more informed decisions that will help you thrive.

We connected with Know Yourself Ambassador and intersectional vegan foodie Cherise Daly about the importance of knowing your body when you’re on a specific diet like veganism. Here’s what Cherise had to say.

KY Clock
What gets you up in the morning?

The promise of good food or my dog having to go outside!

What excited you to be a part of Cronometer’s Know Yourself campaign?

Cronometer has been a big part of my health journey. I tracked my food intake for months to get a better idea of how I’m eating and what I can do to continue to get the nutrients my body needs.

Know Yourself Nutrition Scores
Why is it important for you and your community to track your nutrition? What have you gained as a result?

I have a better idea of what I’m eating and what I can do when I’m lower in certain macros or concerned about my nutrition. For a while, I was on the lower end of B12 and Vitamin D—I mean, did anyone see the sun in 2020 or were you like me and stayed in bed with your dog all day? But I paid attention to more fortified foods, and when to supplement if needed.

I’ve gained the knowledge of which foods include which specific nutrients, and as a result I’ve been able to more confidently talk to my doctor and nutritionist about my plans to stay on track.

What would you tell your community is the greatest benefit of knowing yourself and your nutrition?

As vegans, we’re told we don’t eat enough protein, or there’s no way to get enough nutrients to survive—but having apps like Cronometer is a very easy way to bust those myths.

Do you have any health tips or tricks to share that you’ve adopted along the way?

I love the recipe function! I use it often, which has helped me measure nutrients in the meals I make—something I always thought of as an inconvenience before Cronometer. Now it’s not, especially when I make something just right and want to remember how to make it the same way again.
